This year’s award goes to Colin Jeffries of SASA who, for many years, has managed the UK Potato Quarantine Unit where breeding material and new varieties from outside the UK are tested to ensure they meet our high health standards. Throughout his time leading the Quarantine Unit Colin has been active in evaluating and introducing new and more accurate test methods for quarantine pathogens. He has a global network of contacts and is considered to be a leading expert in potato quarantine matters. He was the lead author in producing FAO technical guidelines on the safe movement of potato germplasm and has been a major contributor to EPPO standards for the safe movement of potatoes. Colin’s work at SASA has underpinned the high health of UK seed potatoes that is now recognised worldwide. Coin is a worthy recipient of our annual award.
